Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced a series of proposals to cut more than $150 billion from the defense budget over the next five years. The efficiency proposals reflect practices that have been increasingly encouraged among the Administration in recent months: cutting inefficient or duplicative programs to create budget reductions.
